How to Wake Up Refreshed.

Tegan’s Top Tips For Better Morning Energy

You know those mornings where you wake up and want to roll back over and go back to sleep? You feel like it takes over an hour to actually feel like a human, and no one would dare talk to you before that coffee has hit. We’ve all been there. I know I have countless times and I still have days where I wake up feeling like I haven’t slept at all.

Today I’m going to share with you my top four tips that can help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Before we get started it is important to note that this advice works best when you use it daily. Habits take time to form and there is no denying that it can be challenging to stick to new routines, but this method really can kick your mornings up a notch, so I urge you to try.

1. Set an alarm for the same time EVERY DAY.

Yes, even for the days you don’t need to get up early. Instead on those days, wake up and read a book or have a cup of tea in bed. You still get to lie-in, but you’re not messing with your circadian rhythm.

2. Stretch while you’re still in bed.

As soon as the alarm goes off it’s time to move and stretch your body- whilst still nice and warm under the covers! Here are some easy stretches you can try:

  • Flex and extend your toes and rotate your ankles.

  • Bring one knee at a time into your chest and pull it across your body for a gentle spine twist.

  • Turn over onto your hands and knees and do a few repetitions of happy cat/angry cat.

3. Whatever you do, don’t go back to sleep!

It’s tempting to hit that snooze button but going back to sleep will leave you feeling more tired when you eventually get up. It’s much better to wake up when the alarm first goes off and sit yourself up or start your stretches.

4. Avoid screens for the first 30 minutes after waking.

Make yourself a cup of tea and get outside for some fresh air and/or sunshine. Soaking in the morning sun helps to reset our circadian rhythm and tells the body it’s time to wake up. Getting more light in the morning can even help with our ability to fall asleep at bedtime. **If the sun hasn’t risen by the time you’re up, or it’s overcast, a good alternative is to turn on overhead lights instead- the idea is to get as much light as possible in the morning.
